I’m usually not one to poke fun at other people’s mistakes.  However, these t.v. news mistakes are too good not to share!

This first one would probably more accurate if Clinton was still President:

I’m sure Norah’s friends had a good time with this one:

This next won seams okay two me.  What about yoo?

A girl’s got to be comfortable, right?

Palin has really let herself go:

Those athletes never speak clearly anyway, so what’s the problem?

When I heard today of the passing of Tony Curtis, of course I thought of his roles in Some Like it Hot, The Defiant Ones..and another great movie that I loved as a kid, The Great Impostor.

But I would be lying to you if I didn’t tell you that the first thing that popped into my head was his role as Stony Curtis in an episode of The Flintstones. Betty and Wilma win a contest in which they get to have Stony Curtis as their “slave boy” for a day, because he’s making a movie called Slave Boy. Somehow Fred ends up being Stony Curtis’s stand-in, and you guessed it, wackiness ensues.

The fact that the world would learn of his passing on this day (of all days)  is an interesting coincidence. That’s because today is the 50th anniversary of The Flintstones prime time cartoon premiering. So wouldn’t it be great if I could find a youtube clip of that particular episode? I did find the entire thing on what I believe was the Japanese version of youtube, but had some trouble getting it to download.

So instead of Stony Curtis..how about a little Ann Margrock?

Blitzen Trapper with Pearly Gate Music

High Noon Saloon, 8:30PM, Sept. 29th | $14, more info @ trueendeavors.com

Blitzen Trapper blitzed (clever, I know) to the scene roughly ten years ago with their interesting blend of folk and pop, cultivated to produce 6 albums, the latest one titled Destroyer of the Void was released in June of this year.

You have to check out this video of their song “Black River Killer.”  Be warned, it does contain some graphic imagery.   But, it’s the coolest video I have seen in a LONG time. Click here for it.

Here’s a free download for “Dragon Song” which is on their new album and the demo of “Heaven and Earth.”

Blitzen Trapper has a unique blend of indie and rock ‘n roll.  Their latest record conjures up  Neil Young and Robert Plant, but Blitzen Trapper needs to be their own.  They should focus on their success in songs like “Furr.”

According to an interview with the website Inflatable Ferret, Blitzen Trapper’s lead singer Eric Earley has been playing music since the age of 3 so this will be a show that has some good musicians.  Wednesday night they will be playing at the ultra cool High Noon Saloon on Washington Avenue in Madison.  The show starts at 8:30.  See ya there.

Musical Influences:

Bob Dylan, Neil Young (they have been known to do covers of his work during shows), Sonic Youth,  and (obviously) The Beatles.

Why should you  go?

  1. It will be nice to drink a beer/beverage of choice at a cool venue and enjoy a good show.
  2. When someone at work asks you what you did last night, you actually have something to say besides, “Oh, I watched 6 re-runs of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.”
  3. They are a cool band and will play some decent songs.

Here’s another link for a free download:

Ask any one that knows me and they will be sure to tell you that country music is near the bottom of my favorite genes; Drive by Truckers, however, are an exception.  Even though there was an abundance of camo and I was one among many to be wearing a red flannel shirt, DBT positively rocked it out last night at the Majestic.  Luckily for me this is not your typical ho-down, backyard barbecue country but more rock with southern country flair and I loved it!

The group said little between songs, instead letting their music speak for itself.  The set was filled with their signature brand of guitar frenzied and feet stomping rock-country, mainly those tracks off their latest album The Big To-Do.  Between the kick ass guitar solo filled anthems were some extremely touching soft spoken ballads that showcased the bands softer side.  While Mike Cooley and Paterson Hood are the forerunners of the group, it was good to see Shonna Tucker also get a chance to showcase her haunting voice.  The group also surprised the audience with special guest Kelly Hogan.  Kelly, an Evansville, Wisconsin native and current full time member of Neko Case’s backing band, had performed earlier with good friend Hood at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.  Hood then invited her to join them at the majestic where she gave a hand in an earlier song and returned for the encore edition of “Angels and Fuselage”.

The spectators completely loved the whole show, but were most enthusiastic about Let There Be Rock, of course reserved for the encore.  The crowd was a spirited one, singing loud and proud and dancing to the point of almost becoming a mosh pit.  Drive by Truckers style of 70’s inspired alternative country is just what my fellow Wisconsin residents love.  This music seemed especially meaningful to the men present in the audience where it was easy to see many a bromance in full swing.  So guys the next time you’re having a boy’s night and are looking for some tunes to throw on, reach for some Drive by Truckers!

Check out some live footage of Patterson Hood performing That Man I Shot at The Wisconsin Veterans Museum below!

Thanks to the Majestic Theater for hosting another great show!

Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers are making their way to Madison!

Growing up with a miss match of influences from his dad’s record collection and his sister’s love of 80’s rock, Kellogg has burst onto the scene with an interesting flavor.  Artists like the Goo Goo Dolls, Josh Ritter, The Pat McGee Band and former tour mates Needtobreathe come to mind. It’s a blend of alt-country rock music with a poppy edge.

After releasing four solo albums Stephen was looking for true musical camaraderie.  He found it in Kit Karlson and Boots Factor. He met the pair at UMass-Amherst and formed the Sixers, or as they’ve affectionately become to be known the “Sk6ers” in 2003.  Since then the group has doing well for themselves, releasing multiple albums and having their tracks featured on shows such as Mercy and One Tree Hill.  They have recently added a fourth addition to the group, Sam Getz, to assist with guitar.  The four-sum released their latest album The Bear on Vanguard Records which was voted “Best of 2009″ by No Depression and JamBase.  Additionally they received the honor of being named 2009 Entertainers of the year by Armed Forces Entertainment.

After performing a little over 1000 shows together, Stephen and the Sixers pride themselves on high energy performances and showmanship.  The Sixers like to keep the audience guessing and alter about 70% of their set list every night.  That way there is always room for spontaneity and authentic memorable moments.  Although they all have their area of expertise they love to switch instruments throughout their shows.

This should definitely be a fun and distinctive live act and one you shouldn’t miss!

Check out this great video morning guy Jonathan Suttin shot during the rally.

From the AP:

President Barack Obama is urging college students at a Wisconsin campaign rally to stick with him and vote in the Nov. 2 elections, promising that “change is gonna come.”

Obama is trying to rally the Democratic base ahead of critical midterm elections that are expected to be dismal for the party.

Obama says Democrats who are upset with the pace of change he promised in 2008 should not let their frustration keep them away from the polls. He says that’s how the Republicans will win and that they will take the country back to the policies that led to the nation’s economic crisis.

Obama told his audience that change will come “but you’ve got to stick with me.”

President Obama made a stop in Madison yesterday afternoon to rally students to vote this November.  Lindsay and I were lucky enough to be guests of Mayor Dave for the event.   It almost felt like we were behind the scenes.   We weren’t in the holding area where the President was waiting to come out and address the crowd and we didn’t even get to meet him.  However, the picture on the left shows how close we were to the action.  I’d say we were about 120 feet from the President.

We felt like we were backstage watching him speak to the crowd.  It definitely gave me a different perspective on the whole event.  We could watch the reactions of the crowd without really being part of the crowd.  It was very cool.  I’d love it if someday those who are in disagreement with the President would come to a rally to hear what he has to say.  The President was obviously preaching to the choir yesterday.  Who am I kidding?  Every politician at every rally is always preaching to the choir.

I’m a supporter of Obama and believe in his mission, but yesterday I got a few things wrong.  I now know:

1) Mayor Dave Cieslewicz pronounces his name Chess-LA-Vich not Chess-LEV-ich.  Even Mayor Dave didn’t know he was saying it wrong until Obama said it properly during the rally.

2) The Packers and Bears did not play on Monday Night Football.  Obama mentioned the game and said it was on Sunday.

3) You hear what you want to hear.  I thought his speech was great.  It sounded inspiring to me.  However, people I know who aren’t Obama fans thought he sounded desperate.  They heard the same speech, but had a much different interpretation.

Bottom line:  We all speak and understand English, but he yesterday he was speaking two different languages.

The World Dairy Expo is in Madison this week..with farmers from all over the world coming here to learn all about new farming technology and genetics.

Now those of you who know me might realize that even though I grew up in a fairly small city in Wisconsin, I am not a farm girl in any way shape or form.

That was proven big time last year when Jonathan and I visited the World Dairy Expo, and Jimmy Voegeli, dairy farmer by day, rock star by night, tried to teach us a few things about farm livin’.

Find out more about Jimmy Voegeli’s band The Jimmys here.

9/27 The Clyde Stubblefield Band

The Frequency, 9:30pm, Ages 21+, $5, More info

Funk
Clyde Stubblefield worked with James Brown.  Enough said.  He plays at The Frequency, located one block from the Capitol at 121 West Main Street. The Clyde Stubblefield Bands plays every Monday night starting at 9:30pm and has been bringing the funk to Madison for over 20 years.

9/28 Ben Harper

Library Mall of UW Campus, 3:30PM

Alternative rock/reggae
Ben Harper will be playing before President Obama’s speech on Tuesday. Harper is one of the top guitarists around and he will definitely get the crowd going.  The only bad thing is there’s not going to be any breathing room to enjoy the music because this is going to bring a lot of people.

9/28 The National

Orpheum Theatre, 7:30pm, $26/$28, more info

Indie Rock
The National has been around since 1999 and has the unique baritone voice of Matt Berninger who has been leading a tremendous band.  Originally from Ohio, they are now based out of Brooklyn and are coming off the very successful High Violet album.  Join them at the Orpheum on Tuesday night.

9/28 Drive by Truckers with The Henry Clay People

Majestic Theatre, 8:30pm, All Ages, $25/$45, more info

Alternative country/rock
Drive by Trucks will definitely take you out on an interesting date.  These southern rockers come from Georgia and Alabama and are the real deal.  They have been very productive recently with the album The Big To Do released in March and they have an upcoming album Go-Go Boots slated for near the end of this year.  If you feel like putting on your country gear and heading out, these guys would be a good show to see.

9/29 Blitzen Trapper

High Noon Saloon, 8:30pm, 18+, $12/14, More Info

Indie Folk/Rock
Blitzen Trapper will be a great show to see because they have a host of good songs to hear.  High Noon Saloon is a great venue for these guys because it has the relaxed backdrop to just enjoy the music and forget about that damn TPS report you have due tomorrow.

9/30 The Boxer Rebellion and Grayshot

The Annex, 9pm, 18+, $10 more info

Alternative Rock
This band formed in London and is centered around lead singer Nathan Nicholson.  The have released two studio albums Exits in 2005 and Union in 2009.  They are sure to put on an interesting show at The Annex, located at 1206 Regent Street.

10/01 Valient Thorr

w/ Junius and Howl and The Antiprism

The Frequency, 10pm, 21+, more info

Hard Rock
This band looks like they belong raiding some village in Europe.  And they look like they can rock your pants off.  They originate from North Carolina and have an almost funky rock sound that is intriguing and terrifying.  You probably will have trouble hearing what anybody says to you the next day because they will be loud.  Check ‘em out and let us know what you think.

10/02 The Thermals

w/ Cymbals eat Guitars and Sleeping in the Aviary

The Annex, 9:30pm, 18+, more info

Pop/Rock/Punk
The Thermals have been around since 2002 and have been punking up the rock scene since starting in Portland, Oregon.  Their latest album Personal Life was released this month and has faced lukewarm reviews, but they will put on a good show so you should check them out at the Annex.

10/02 The Acorn

The Frequency, 10PM, $10, 21+, more info

Indie Rock
This Canadian band has released their new album No Ghost this summer and they will be a nice tranquil indie folk band to check out at The Frequency.  They have some driving guitar beats that lay down long tracks that are slow and moody and beautiful.  They would be a fun band to check out on Saturday.
