The e-mail came late last night.  The Tuesday morning Masters Swim class would be meeting in the “Sport” pool instead of the lap pool.  And we would be playing Water Polo.

Oh, this should be good.

Most everyone in the class had never played before this morning.  Including me.  And it showed- although I would say for a bunch of people who had no clue what was going on- we didn’t do too bad.

When class started we swam a few laps to get warmed up- then a few more laps skulling and swimming head-up, just to get us in the proper form.  A few instructions followed and a quick Water Polo-specific passing and shooting drill.

Then came the fun- we split up into two teams and played about a 30 minute game.  My team scored the first two goals of the game, but then got shut out for the rest of the game and ended up losing- I think the final score was 4-2.

All-in-all, a fun workout that definitely did NOT play to my strengths.  And of course we’re doing it again in the Thursday night class…can’t wait!

Dick Clark, host of American Bandstand and numerous other TV shows, turns 81 today.  While I do remember Bandstand from Saturday mornings, I’m probably most familiar with Dick Clark from game shows like the “$10,000 Pyramid.”

He’s probably best known in recent years  for “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve,” which still features his name but is now hosted by Ryan Seacrest, following Clark’s stroke several years ago.

A quick check of the Internet Movie Database shows that Mr. Clark had a lot of other experience as well. He hosted “Dick Clark’s Celebrity Bloopers,” did a voice on the cartoon “The Angry Beavers” and played himself on several episodes of “Dharma & Greg.”  He was also the murderer on the very last episode of  “Perry Mason,” which is a pretty cool footnote to TV history.

But this might be my favorite cameo of all!

For years and years athletes have been praising a higher power whenever they have success on the field.  Many baseball players will kiss the tips of their fingers and then point to the sky.  Many football players thank the Lord in post game interviews for helping them win the game.

I’ve always thought this was a little strange because does it mean that this higher power hates the other team?  If the Dallas Cowboys have a miracle play at the end of the game does this mean  God is a Cowboys’ fan?  Really?  He can do better than that.

One NFL player has finally blamed the Lord for his mistake on the field.  Steve Johnson dropped a game winning catch for the Buffalo Bills in overtime.  If he would have caught the ball, the Bills would have upset Pittsburgh.  That really would have been a miracle.   Johnson was so upset after the game he sent this unholy Tweet.

Bravo Mr. Johnson.  You’re right.  How  could the Good Lord above let this happen?  Well, we here at Jonathan’s Jabberings have arranged an interview with The Big Guy to find out why.

Me:  Hello Lord.  I know you’re busy, but thanks for taking a few moments to talk with me.

Lord: Yes, Jonathan.  It’s my pleasure.

Me: So, God.  How could you let Steve Johnson drop that pass?  Don’t you like him?

Lord:  Let’s be honest.  He plays for the Buffalo Bills.  I don’t really have a big problem with the team except for O.J.  I can’t believe that guy got away with that.  Residents there have enough problems just living in Buffalo.  Creating Buffalo was not one of my best achievements.

Me: Didn’t they lose four Super Bowls in a row back in the early 90’s?

Lord: Yes but that had to do completely with their quarterback Jim Kelly.  When he was a 15-year-old he asked me to help him kiss Jenny Deanstag.  She was a girl in his English class.  His exact words were: “Lord, if you can just help me get a little tongue time with Jenny.  I’ll never ask you for anything ever again.”

Me: So…

Lord: He got his make out session with Jenny, but it cost him four Super Bowls.

Me: Pretty hefty price.

Lord: I know.  Here’s the best part.  After making out with Jim she realized she didn’t really like boys and she’s been “playing for the otherside” ever since.  Which I fully endorse by the way.

Me:  On a side note, do you watch me while I’m sleeping like Santa Claus?

Lord: Aren’t you Jewish?

Me: Yes.

Lord: So Santa doesn’t stop at your house no matter if you’re naughty or nice.

Me: Good point.

Lord: Anyway, I don’t really have time to watch you. I’m too busy watching all these other sports where athletes are constantly asking me for help.  I’ve got soccer, football, baseball and basketball.  And that’s  just on a pro level.

Me: What about hockey?

Lord: Are they still playing that professionally?  Anyway, I’ve got all the college sports and high school sports and little leagues to pay attention to all at once.  I mean I am God, but come on.  There’s only so much I can do.

Me: I understand.

Lord: So you have to understand I didn’t have time to pay attention to Steve Johnson’s dropped pass.

Me: So you’re saying it wasn’t your fault.  You had nothing to do with it?  It was all in Johnson’s hands or not in his hands in this case?

Lord:  No, I actually had bet on Pittsburgh.

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke embarked on a Human Art piece that was inspired by the cover of Yorke’s solo album The Eraser that was part of the project 350 Earth that is promoting climate change awareness.

Well, on the morning of November 27th, around 2 thousand people gathered in Brighton, England and formed the image of King Canute, who once tried to stop the tide.

You can find more pictures at 350 Earth’s Flickr Page.

Run over to Ryan Adams’ new website for Pax Am to get a free download of the track “Destroyers” by Ryan Adams and the Cardinals.  According to Pitchfork, the new song is “possibly one of the 11 demos Adams is offering for download to people who buy his forthcoming archival release III/IV.”

If you want to hear the group messing around and jamming out you are in luck.  There is also some free available downloads of some “riffage” from the set-up day for the III/IV /Easy tiger sessions.

Jamie and Adam, hosts of the Discovery Channel hit show Mythbusters, have a big job a head of them.  President Obama personally requested for the to crack a myth for him.  He and his daughters are apparently ” big fans of the show” and he believes one myth hasn’t been nearly tested enough.

On the December 8th episode, the team will once again (after twice disproving the myth) test the myth of Archimedes’ solar ray.  You can see the preview for the episode below.

The myth is based on Archimedes’ weapons during the Siege of Syracuse.  It was written that he destroyed enemy ships with fire by using “burning glasses.”  The device, sometimes called the “Archimedes heat ray”, was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire.  Maybe the Commander-in-Chief is looking for some new weapons tactics?

This tactic has been debated for ages and has a lot of critics.  So far the Mythbusters team has categorized it as busted (or failed) based on the need for optimal and unlikely weather conditions.

The latest BCS standings move the Badgers to number 5 with Ohio State ranked 6th and Michigan State at 8.  Unless something wack happens with the Harris and coaches’ polls next week the Badgers are headed to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 2000.  Most are betting the Badgers will take on TCU in Pasadena.

Last time I was at the Rose Bowl was to see Depeche Mode.  The recording of that June 18, 1988 show ended up being released as Depeche Mode 101.  How cool would it be to go back to watch Ball, White, the offensive line, and the rest of the Badgers win “The Grandaddy of Them All”?
