Lots of people have attended UW-Madison and never left after graduation. One of these the great Ben Sidran. While a student at UW, he helped form a band called the Ardells with Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs. Ben later went on to write Millers big hit Space Cowboy.
After a short stint in LA, he returns to Madison is 1971 and has been here ever since., teaching a course at the UW about the business of music, and hosted a variety of jazz programs on NPR.
One of my favorite of his collaborations is with Van Morrison, Mose Allison and Georgie Fame on Van’s album, ” Tell me Something” in 1996.
His latest project is pretty awesome ” Dylan Different”. Ben has recorded a dozen well known Bob Dylan songs and made them his own! Some of the tunes are All I really Want to Do, Tangled Up in Blue, and Knockin’ on Heavens Door. If you are either a Dylan fan or a jazz fan, you will love this album that comes out in November! Here’s a sample.
