I’ve had the movie SURVEILLANCE, rated R, in my DVR now-playing list for months. The movie originally came out in 2008. But to little fanfare. It was written and directed by Jennifer Lynch, daughter of my fave David Lynch. That was the only reason I knew the movie existed. And I know it’s since been released on home video.
I remember Jennifer Lynch’s last film in 1993. BOXING HELENA. A movie I never even finished. Just an odd, bad movie. And remember, I’m a fan of her dad. He’s king of the odd.
So I guess I’ve been waiting for the right night, the right mood, for SURVEILLANCE. I loved it.
It’s a simple story of two FBI agents who arrive in a small New Mexico town to investigate some murders. There were three witnesses to the crime. Each had a different point of view. Each has something to hide. It’s up to the agents to piece together the testimonies to find the truth.
It’s the way the story is told that kept me intrigued. Flashbacks and current scenes flip back and forth. I thought I was piecing it together, but then Lynch reveals a little more to flip me around.
When the actual crime is finally played out, I was riveted. Couldn’t take my eyes off of the screen. Even though it was very bloody. And even though I knew who was going to die and live. It was like I NEEDED to see after seeing everything leading up to the bloodshed.
But then…that’s not the end. There’s more movie.
If this is what Lynch waited over 15 years to create, I’m hoping she doesn’t wait that long for her next. She created a movie with hints of her dad, but yet very original.
Like the title says, SURVEILLANCE eventually lets you see almost everything. Just be patient.
